The myth of Nixon’s ‘Southern Strategy’

by Dinesh DSouza on the hill.com

The Democratic Party’s claim to be the party of the good guys, while the Republicans are the party of the bad guys, hinges on the tale of Richard Nixon’s so-called Southern Strategy. According to this narrative, advanced by progressive historians, Nixon orchestrated a party switch on civil rights by converting the racists in the Democratic Party — the infamous Dixiecrats — into Republicans. And now, according to a recent article in The New RepublicPresident Trump is the “true heir, the beneficiary of the policies the party has pursued for more than half a century.”

Yes, this story is in the textbooks and on the history channel and regularly repeated in the media, but is it true? First, no one has ever given a single example of an explicitly racist pitch by Nixon during his long career. One might expect that a racist appeal to the Deep South actually would have to be made, and to be understood as such. Yet, quite evidently none was.

So progressives insist that Nixon made a racist “dog whistle” appeal to Deep South voters.  Evidently he spoke to them in a kind of code. Really? Is it plausible that Nixon figured out how to communicate with Deep South racists in a secret language? Do Deep South bigots, like dogs, have some kind of heightened awareness of racial messages — messages that are somehow indecipherable to the media and the rest of the country?

This seems unlikely, but let’s consider the possibility. Progressives insist that Nixon’s appeals to drugs and law and order were coded racist messaging. Yet when Nixon ran for president in 1968 the main issue was the Vietnam War. One popular Republican slogan of the period described the Democrats as the party of “acid, amnesty and abortion.” Clearly there is no suggestion here of race.

Nixon’s references to drugs and law and order in 1968 were quite obviously directed at the antiwar protesters who had just disrupted the Democratic Convention in Chicago. His target was radical activists such as Abbie Hoffman and Bill Ayers. Nixon scorned the hippies, champions of the drug culture such as Timothy Leary, and draft-dodgers who fled to Canada. The vast majority of these people were white.

Nixon had an excellent record on civil rights. He supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was an avid champion of the desegregation of public schools. The progressive columnist Tom Wicker wrote in the New York Times, “There’s no doubt about it — the Nixon administration accomplished more in 1970 to desegregate Southern school systems than had been done in the 16 previous years or probably since. There’s no doubt either that it was Richard Nixon personally who conceived and led the administration’s desegregation effort.”

Upon his taking office in 1969, Nixon also put into effect America’s first affirmative action program. Dubbed the Philadelphia Plan, it imposed racial goals and timetables on the building trade unions, first in Philadelphia and then elsewhere. Now, would a man seeking to build an electoral base of Deep South white supremacists actually promote the first program to legally discriminate in favor of blacks? This is absurd.

Nixon barely campaigned in the Deep South. His strategy, as outlined by Kevin Phillips in his classic work, “The Emerging Republican Majority,” was to target the Sunbelt, the vast swath of territory stretching from Florida to Nixon’s native California. This included what Phillips terms the Outer or Peripheral South.

Nixon recognized the South was changing. It was becoming more industrialized, with many northerners moving to the Sunbelt. Nixon’s focus, Phillips writes, was on the non-racist, upwardly-mobile, largely urban voters of the Outer or Peripheral South. Nixon won these voters, and he lost the Deep South, which went to Democratic segregationist George Wallace.

And how many racist Dixiecrats did Nixon win for the GOP? Turns out, virtually none. Among the racist Dixiecrats, Strom Thurmond of South Carolina was the sole senator to defect to the Republicans — and he did this long before Nixon’s time. Only one Dixiecrat congressman, Albert Watson of South Carolina, switched to the GOP. The rest, more than 200 Dixiecrat senators, congressmen, governors and high elected officials, all stayed in the Democratic Party.

The progressive notion of a Dixiecrat switch is a myth. Yet it is myth that continues to be promoted, using dubious case examples. Though the late Sens. Jesse Helms of North Carolina and John Tower of Texas and former Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott all switched from the Democratic Party to the GOP, none of these men was a Dixiecrat.

The South, as a whole, became Republican during the 1980s and 1990s. This had nothing to do with Nixon; it was because of Ronald Reagan and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s “Contract with America.” The conservative appeal to patriotism, anti-communism, free markets, pro-life and Christianity had far more to do with the South’s movement into the GOP camp than anything related to race.

Yet the myth of Nixon’s Southern Strategy endures — not because it’s true, but because it conveniently serves to exculpate the crimes of the Democratic Party. Somehow the party that promoted slavery, segregation, Jim Crow and racial terrorism gets to wipe its slate clean by pretending that, with Nixon’s connivance, the Republicans stole all their racists. It’s time we recognize this excuse for what it is: one more Democratic big lie.

Democrats are Such Snakes and Their Followers Such Embiciles

In our system of government, our elected officials are supposed to get together, debate and make law. Democrats are so corrupt now that in Texas, their new strategy is to flee their state so their house of representatives cannot do their jobs. This effort is so disingenuous, immature and corrupt. I would be embarrassed to be this Texas Democrat. I’m glad the moderator tore him apart and exposed his corruption. The United States does not need snakes like this in our government.

Frustration of a concerned Conservative

It is a heavy burden to be concerned for deceived leftists on social media, especially family members when they can post an ignorant meme in 5 seconds that properly takes a week to refute. Jesus called it casting pearls before swine. I sent out an email tonight to conservative family members (I’ve given up on social media cesspools) with a 6 page expose on what has really animated Trump supporters over the last 5 years.

But at this point, I’m preaching to the choir because it is a waste of time to try to be sensible with a leftist. I could present (and have presented) a 20 page paper on any subject and the response would be, “Racist, Bigot, Homophobe!”

The difference between me and every leftist i know is that I used to be pretty far left myself. I know the shtick. I rejected it all as a wrong headed way to live. I also became a Christian and learned just how antichrist leftism is. Whereas it seems every leftist Ive ever talked to has only been on the left and has no clue how people on the right actually live and think.

At every Trump rally which were all peaceful and celebratory, leftist mobs waited outside to attack and harass the attendees when the event was over. The contrast was obvious. You say Jan 6 wasn’t peaceful? I direct you to this list to the left <———-. Click on “Jan 6” and learn a few things.

People on the left are violent and mean and without decent morality. The only reason they got away with so much was the left leaning media gave them a pass.

How dare these people question our faith in God or our patriotic motives!

Regarding Trump: I Hate to Say I Told You So

I am presently working on a refutation of 5 lies about Donald Trump that were posted in a meme by a family member. It took this person 5 seconds to post the meme. I am on my 2nd week of accumulating evidence and video clips to complete the refutation. And so it goes if you value the truth. As the saying says, a lie can travel around the world before the truth gets out of bed.

The maddening thing is that the political left is forever inventing and spreading lies that take 5 seconds to post and 2 weeks to refute. I wish people on the left would do their homework. They would discover they are expending tremendous amounts of time, energy and money on worthless, devious lies.

None the less, Trump was right about the items in this video and the items I am refuting. The left opposition was completely wrong. Maliciously wrong.

Casting Pearls Before Swine

When I was in Bible college, I was rather naive about people. I thought anyone would see the blessing of Gods Spirit moving in an assembly and appreciate it and want to be a part of it. Not so. I learned just how much Jesus was right when he said the world was ENMITY with God. And Satan is the other enemy who works in people to distract and deceive at every opportunity.  One particular experience summed up the hard lesson I learned in the early 1980s and has remained with me until this day.
I had a guest couple go to church with me. They were old friends visiting from my old home in Sacramento, California. It was a particularly powerful meeting with a wonderful music ministry, a strong message and body ministry. I was so glad they had the opportunity to partake.
When the service was over, I asked them to give me their honest opinion of the service. They commented, “I really don’t like the color of the carpet.” I was dumbfounded. What they had just witnessed was nothing short of a miracle. To them, the only thing they took with them was the carpet color.
Jesus once commented,  “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”  Mat 7:6 (NASB)
Of course, there is a general principle that doesn’t just pertain to “holy” things. The same principle applies to anyone who will not appreciate what good things they are given. Just shake the dust from your shoes and move on from them. Also it would be a good thing to look at your own heart to see if you are the pearl or the swine.
I listened to former Pres. Trump today give a speech at CPAC about relevant issues like the border, the COVID vaccine, Operation Warp Speed, the historic peace deals that were made in the Middle East, the Iran sanctions, the Keystone pipeline job losses since Biden took office, the surging gas prices, our military strength and many other things. It was a good speech.
When I checked on the reactions to the speech, I noticed the left was obsessing about something completely irrelevant and something that was not even true (as usual). They were claiming the shape of the CPAC stage resembled an obscure symbol  that supposedly was used by the Nazis.
My first thought was Jesus’ talk about casting pearls before swine. It seems trying to get through to these leftist people is like trying to teach algebra to river rats.
For the record, here is a drawing of the REAL shape of the CPAC stage (since it is of such vital importance):

Trump Has Never Lost to the Democrats

You would think people would get a clue. The Democrats have been out for Donald Trump since he announced he was running for president. And they have resisted and fought him for 5 years without any success at all. Literally everything they have tried has failed. Their efforts culminated in two, count them, TWO efforts to impeach. They failed both times.

You know, when I see someone prevail 100% of the time against such relentless efforts, I start thinking God is protecting them. And I do believe God has used Donald Trump in saving this country from self destruction. And if God is involved in an effort, the opposition will never succeed.

Nancy Pelosi, you have not seen the last of Donald Trump. And you can take that to the bank!
